Graduate/professional internships
Loewy Research Fellowships
In 2005, the Loewy Family Foundation began to provide a generous annual grant to establish the Preserve's paid, professional-level research fellowships. The Fellows selected for work in 2010 are Elizabeth Spencer and Bud Sechler, ecologists with the New York Natural Heritage Program. They will investigate several factors (such as landscape, vegetation, and disturbances like insect defoliation or deer browsing) that impact the habitat of bird species classified in New York as being of Greatest Conservation Need--work that will contribute to improved management efforts in our ecologically vital chestnut oak forests. For more information, see the fellowship announcement and program guidelines. Undergraduate internships Sussman Internships
We encourage graduate students to become Sussman interns at the Preserve. Students at SUNY ESF and other participating schools may apply through their school for support from the Edna Bailey Sussman Foundation. You can learn more about the Sussman Internships here. Preserve-funded internships
Every summer, the Mohonk Preserve offers paid internships for students. The internships run for 10 weeks (June to mid-August). The application deadline for the 2010 internships is March 15, 2010.
The Thom Scheuer Land Management Internship is open to college juniors and seniors. Interns perform basic ranger duties; promote visitor safety; help with trail and road design, construction, and repair; assist to maintain the Preserve's boundaries; and support land protection transactions.
The Schaefer Research Internship is open to college freshman and sophomores. Research interns work at the Preserve's Daniel Smiley Research Center to conduct field studies and collect natural science data utilizing GIS/GPS technology, and develop and carry out a research projects of their own in conjunction with Preserve staff.
